US and ASEAN Chair Urge Unconditional Release of Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi

MANILA - The US State Department and ​the chair of the Association of ‌Southeast Asian Nations on Friday reiterated their calls for the unconditional release of Myanmar's detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other political prisoners. The statement underscores the persistent international concern over Myanmar's prolonged political instability and human rights situation. Aung San Suu Kyi has been imprisoned on multiple charges since the military coup in 2021, with her health and treatment drawing significant global attention. ASEAN has faced challenges in presenting a unified stance on the Myanmar issue due to differing opinions among member states. However, the Philippines, in its capacity as chair, has emphasized its commitment to urging improvements in Myanmar's situation to maintain regional peace and stability. The US, while continuing sanctions against Myanmar's military junta, has also called for the restoration of democratic processes through dialogue.
