Vietnam Declares National Mourning for Lao NA President

Vietnam has decided to observe a two-day national mourning period starting August 9 to express deepest condolences over the passing of Lao National Assembly President Xaysomphone Phomvihane, who died on August 8. The decision by the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee, the President, the Government, and the Vietnamese Front for the Protection of the Fatherland honors the late leader's contributions. Chairman of the National Assembly Tran Thanh Man will lead a high-ranking delegation to Laos on August 9 to pay respects. Laos has declared a five-day national mourning period from August 9 to 13 at the National Convention Centre. The declaration of a mourning period underscores the traditional friendship and strategic partnership between Vietnam and Laos. For Vietnam, a one-party socialist state, expressing deep condolences in such instances reflects its diplomatic stance towards its socialist brethren. Separately, General Secretary of the CPV Central Committee and President To Lam is on a visit to Australia and New Zealand from August 9 to 14. This trip aims to strengthen the Vietnam-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and contribute to regional peace and stability. Vietnam's foreign policy emphasizes balancing economic growth with robust international relations, and these concurrent diplomatic activities highlight its multifaceted approach. Furthermore, NA Chairman Tran Thanh Man has directed the Economic Police to leverage scientific and technological advancements, enhance data analytics, and improve digital investigation capabilities, focusing on supply chain security.
