Cambodia Urges Citizen Participation in Dengue Fever Prevention by Eliminating Mosquito Breeding Sites

Khuoch Chamroeun, Governor of Kandal Province, has urged all families to actively participate in the prevention and control of dengue fever by eliminating stagnant water and potential mosquito breeding sites around their homes, such as cans, bottles, and car tires. This appeal was made during a ceremony where the provincial governor presided over the handover of mosquito-killing spray machines to the administrations of all 13 districts and municipalities. These machines are intended for use in interventions to prevent and control the spread of dengue fever in local areas. The event took place on the afternoon of July 29, 2026, at the Kandal Provincial Hall and was attended by representatives from relevant ministries and departments, district and municipal authorities, students, boy scouts, members of the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC), and young people from the Cambodian Red Cross. The governor reiterated that dengue fever prevention is a task requiring the participation of all parties. Authorities and the Ministry of Health must intervene promptly in affected areas, while citizens must cooperate by eliminating mosquito breeding sources around their residences. He stated that if all parties diligently implement these measures, it will significantly contribute to effectively reducing and controlling the spread of dengue fever in Kandal Province. Concurrently, he instructed district and municipal administrations to collaborate with the Ministry of Health and local authorities to regularly monitor the dengue fever situation. It is crucial to accurately identify the village, commune, or district from which infections originate to enable immediate intervention in those locations. Furthermore, if a dengue fever case is detected in a village, a task force should be dispatched to spray insecticides widely throughout that village, not just in the patient's house, as mosquitoes can transmit the virus to other residents. In addition, Governor Khuoch Chamroeun urged the Provincial Department of Health to distribute abate larvicide to districts and municipalities, enabling them to continuously use it for eliminating larvae and preventing mosquito proliferation. This work must be carried out regularly and with close cooperation between authorities, the health sector, and local teams. The equipment handed over is not sufficient to cover all areas across the entire province but will be used as an intervention measure targeting areas with dengue fever outbreaks to break the chain of transmission and prevent further spread. This signifies that the fight against dengue fever cannot solely rely on health officials or local authorities but requires the participation of every citizen. Notably, people should not wait until infections occur to take action but should collectively engage in preventive measures to stop mosquitoes from breeding and spreading the disease within the community.
