Transportation Ministry Breaks Ground on BRT Charging Stations in Bandung, Supported by South Korea
The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation has commenced the construction of charging stations for the Bandung Basin Rapid Transit (BRT) electric bus fleet. This initiative, part of the Indonesia Mass Transit (MASTRAN) project supported by a grant from the South Korean government, aims to modernize the national transportation system towards a low-emission future.
The Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) has initiated the construction of charging stations to support the operation of the Bandung Basin Rapid Transit (BRT) Bus. This initiative is part of the Indonesia Mass Transit (MASTRAN) project, which is entering its infrastructure development phase and aims to foster a green and smart city in West Java. The groundbreaking ceremony for the charging facility took place at Depo Leuwipanjang in Bandung, West Java, on Wednesday, July 15. This project is a collaborative effort between the Directorate General of Land Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation and the Sustainable Mass Electric Transportation to Support Green Smart City in West Java project, backed by a grant from the Government of South Korea through the Chungnam Center for Creative Economy & Innovation (C-CCEI). Muiz Thohir, Director of Road Transport at the Ministry of Transportation, stated that the construction of this facility marks a significant first step in accelerating the transformation of national transportation towards a more modern, efficient, and low-emission system. "This activity is a sign of the start of construction in the cooperation project and is the beginning of accelerating the transformation of national transportation. We are moving towards a modern, efficient, and low-emission system," Thohir said in an official statement, Wednesday, July 15. According to him, transportation transformation cannot be done alone so it requires collaboration between the central government, local government, and international partners. Muiz explained that the Indonesia Mass Transit (MASTRAN) project is part of the implementation of the Asta Cita of the President of the Republic of Indonesia which focuses on the development of quality infrastructure and the acceleration of the green economy. Through this project, the BRT-based mass transportation system will be integrated with an electric bus fleet and smart and environmentally friendly charging infrastructure. "We express our appreciation to the South Korean government for the support it has provided. We hope that this good cooperation can continue and provide benefits for both countries," he said. Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Chungnam Center for Creative Economy & Innovation (C-CCEI) Kim Sungkeun said the groundbreaking marked the start of collaboration between the Indonesian and South Korean governments in the development of sustainable public transportation infrastructure, especially electric bus charging facilities. Kim Sungkeun hopes that the project can become a foundation for the development of sustainable public transportation in Indonesia as well as strengthen cooperation between the two countries in the development of smart cities.
