Vietnam Intensifies Fight Against IUU Fishing to Lift EU 'Yellow Card'

Vietnam is resolutely advancing its fight against Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing nationwide, aiming to lift the 'yellow card' warning issued by the European Union (EU). The period from August 15 to September 15 has been designated as the 'Month for Intensifying IUU Fishing Prevention,' with the Fisheries Administration, the Coast Guard, and local authorities collaborating to strengthen enforcement. This initiative is considered an extremely important political task, directly linked to Vietnam's national credibility and the sustainable development of its fisheries sector. The crackdown covers fishing ports, seafood markets, and even remote islands, with the goal of eradicating IUU fishing. The Coast Guard's Second Command has also deployed forces during this intensified month to focus on combating illegal fishing activities. Authorities have expressed a strong determination to have the 'yellow card' lifted and are emphasizing legal awareness and fostering a nationwide commitment to IUU fishing prevention. Specific activities include legal education through 'mock trials' to disseminate knowledge about IUU fishing laws. Emphasis is also placed on cooperation with fishermen, demonstrating support for their efforts to oppose IUU fishing. Under Vietnam's single-party system, government decisions tend to be implemented swiftly and robustly. The current IUU fishing measures are strongly driven by international pressure, particularly the economic incentive of maintaining access to the EU market. In its relations with China, Vietnam faces the common challenge of sustainable marine resource utilization, and adherence to international norms could also bolster Vietnam's diplomatic standing.
