Cambodia Hopes for Improved Relations with Thailand, Emphasizes Constructive Dialogue for Regional Stability

Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Prak Sokhonn, expressed Cambodia's sincere hope for Thailand's participation in a constructive reconciliation process aimed at improving bilateral relations. This was stated at the opening of the meeting with the Committee for Reconciliation of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in the Republic of Singapore on the morning of September 15, 2026. Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn stated that such actions would facilitate the return of over 20,000 displaced people to their homes, preserve important cultural sites damaged during conflicts, and pave the way for the normalization of bilateral relations. He further added, "These efforts will significantly contribute to reducing tensions and rebuilding trust." Concurrently, the Deputy Prime Minister affirmed that restoring peace and stability between Cambodia and Thailand would not only benefit the people of both countries but also the entire ASEAN community. He emphasized, "Cambodia has chosen this path to seek a peaceful way forward in accordance with international law. Cambodia views this reconciliation process as a means to rebuild trust and not as a form of escalating tensions."
