Chiang Rai Flood Relief: Deputy PM Urges Swift Weir Repairs

Heavy rains and mudslides have recently caused major damage across Chiang Rai province. In response to the escalating crisis, Deputy Prime Minister Songsak Thongsri visited the flooded areas on July 18, 2026, urging for accelerated repairs at the Thung Luang Weir to aid local farmers and families in preparing for future storms. Chiang Rai province has faced severe weather problems and natural disasters throughout the year. Many rural areas, particularly in the Thoeng district, have suffered from sudden floods and dangerous mudslides that have ruined valuable crops. Climate change is cited as a significant factor, bringing heavier rainfall than usual to the northern province. Furthermore, local waterways have become shallow, with dirt blocking free water flow, exacerbating flooding conditions. The damaged Thung Luang Weir can no longer effectively store vital water for the upcoming dry season, nor can it prevent floodwaters during the heavy rainy season. Deputy PM Songsak, accompanied by experts from the Office of the National Water Resources and the Deputy Governor, inspected the local damage. Their primary objective is to fix the Thung Luang Weir as quickly as possible. Local officials have placed heavy sandbags as a temporary fix, but a permanent solution is deemed essential. The Deputy PM ordered local government agencies to develop a lasting solution that can handle changing weather patterns and protect the community from future climate disasters. This vital repair work is now part of the national water management plan. The national water office is closely monitoring the project's progress and ensuring effective and swift use of the government budget. Construction of a new weir is officially set to begin in 2027 with proper government funding. Until then, local agencies will continue to monitor rising river water levels and work to keep residents safe during the current rainy season.
