Five Chinese Nationals Arrested in Kep Province for Illegal Firearms and Discharge

Kep Province, Cambodia – Authorities in Kep Province have arrested five Chinese nationals and two Cambodians in connection with illegal firearms possession and discharge. The incident occurred around 3:30 PM on September 9, 2026, on a curved road near the Sea Horse roundabout in Kampong Tralach village, Prey Thom commune, Kep City. Under the high command of Lieutenant General Sao Sokha, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces and Commander-in-Chief of the National Gendarmerie, and with procedural coordination from Deputy Prosecutor Louy Tihour of the Kep Provincial Court, specialized forces from the Kep Provincial Gendarmerie's Investigation and Suppression Bureau, led by Lieutenant Colonel Miech Buntha, deputy commander, launched an operation. Of the seven individuals apprehended, three Chinese nationals (including one female) and two Cambodians (including one female) were released after being educated and allowed to return home, as per the decision of Deputy Prosecutor Louy Tihour. However, one Chinese national, identified as WU YANWEI, a 36-year-old male, was detained. He was found to be without a passport and his occupation is listed as uncertain. He has been transferred to the Kep Provincial Gendarmerie headquarters along with the seized evidence for further questioning and legal proceedings. The case highlights ongoing concerns regarding illegal activities by foreign nationals in Cambodia, particularly involving firearms. The influx of foreign investment and residents, primarily from China, has been a significant aspect of Cambodia's economic development in recent years.
