Indonesia Deploys Cloud Seeding Operations to Combat South Sumatra Wildfires

The Indonesian government has commenced cloud seeding operations in South Sumatra to combat escalating wildfires and mitigate the severe air pollution they cause. This initiative aims to induce rainfall by dispersing agents like silver iodide into the clouds above the fire-stricken areas. South Sumatra has been experiencing frequent fires, particularly in peatlands and forests, with the onset of the dry season. These fires have generated widespread haze, impacting residents' health, disrupting air travel, and affecting the regional economy. The government has declared the situation a "national emergency" and is employing weather modification as a complementary measure to ground-based firefighting efforts. The cloud seeding operations are being coordinated by a multi-agency task force including the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), and the National Bational Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). Air force aircraft will be utilized to disperse seeding agents over affected areas when meteorological conditions are favorable. This weather modification technique has been previously employed in Indonesia for drought mitigation and flood control.
