Cambodia's Auto Assembly Expands With New GAC Plant Launch

PHNOM PENH, Sep 17, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s automotive assembly sector is expanding with the official launch of a new GAC plant in Kampong Chhnang province, adding capacity to the country’s growing manufacturing base, officials said Thursday. The facility, operated by TH Automotive Manufacturing, was inaugurated in Khnay Kok village, Kampong Tralach district. The $19.3 million project covers 11 hectares and employs 250 local workers alongside two foreign technicians. TH Automotive, a subsidiary of TH Group, secured exclusive rights from GAC International in 2025 to assemble vehicles in Cambodia. The company is fully Cambodian‑owned, with Nom Tong holding 51% and Nom Hav 49%. The plant assembles GAC and Chevrolet vehicles with an annual capacity of 20,000 units, 90% for the domestic market and 10% for export. Trial operations began in March, producing 213 vehicles before the official launch. Industry data lists 13 automotive assembly plants established between 2011 and 2026, with combined investment of about $245.7 million. Facilities are spread across Koh Kong, Svay Rieng, Pursat, Banteay Meanchey, Kampong Speu, Kandal, Phnom Penh, Preah Sihanouk and Kampong Chhnang. Cambodia’s broader manufacturing sector has also expanded. By July 2026, 3,357 factories employed 1.36 million workers, with investment exceeding $28 billion. Output in the first half of 2026 reached $9.83 billion, up 65% from a year earlier. Officials said additional projects are under way, including KNN Automotive in Kandal, ZDG Assembly in Kandal and ZO Motors in Pursat. The launch of the GAC plant underscores Cambodia’s drive to boost local assembly, create jobs and support exports.
