Prabowo Urges National Unity on Democrat Party Anniversary

JAKARTA - President Prabowo Subianto reminded that differences of opinion, competition, and criticism are part of democracy. However, he stressed that political differences should not be an excuse to break national unity, harmony, and friendship as fellow countrymen. Speaking at the 25th anniversary of the Democratic Party at the GBK Arena, Jakarta, Prabowo stated that Indonesian democracy provides space for each party to have different political colors and views. He assessed that political competition, criticism, suggestions, and recommendations are normal in democracy, but the most important aspect is that all these differences are conveyed in an atmosphere that maintains unity. "This is Indonesian democracy. And today, on this stage, yes, this is Indonesian democracy. Various colors. Compete, criticize, give suggestions, give recommendations. Convey things that may not be easy to convey but we are still friendly, still friendly, still family," said Prabowo. He emphasized that mutual respect is the key to running a democracy, stating that differences of opinion should not turn into hostility or eliminate the sense of brotherhood. Prabowo also acknowledged the Democratic Party's journey and their attitude when outside the government. "The Democratic Party has won, has never won. It has been at the top, has been in government. But when it is not in power, the Democratic Party does not curse. The Democratic Party does not burn," he said. Recounting his own experience of failing to win the presidential contest several times before finally receiving the people's mandate, Prabowo called defeat a part of the democratic process that must be accepted with open arms. "I didn't win four times, I accepted it. Yes, we're moving on," he stated, highlighting the need for both losing and winning parties to respect the results and maintain relations as fellow citizens. On this occasion, Prabowo also expressed his appreciation for the Democratic Party's support in the 2019 and 2024 elections, interpreting it as a sign of shared ideals and principles in building Indonesia. He concluded by emphasizing that democracy must be a means to continue serving the people, and political dynamics should not overshadow the primary purpose of governance: the interests of the community and national unity.
