Indonesia to Focus EV Incentives on Domestic High-Value Products

The Indonesian government is set to focus its incentives for electric vehicle (EV) adoption on high-value products manufactured domestically. This strategy aims to foster the local automotive industry and enhance the competitiveness of the entire EV supply chain. According to government officials, this new approach will not only encourage EV purchases but also stimulate investment across the value chain, including domestic research and development, component manufacturing, and final assembly. Specifically, incentives are expected to be strengthened to support the domestic production of high-value components such as battery technology, motors, and control systems, which significantly impact EV performance and cost. Indonesia possesses significant potential as an EV battery production hub, backed by its abundant mineral resources like nickel. The government seeks to maximize economic benefits by processing these resources domestically and channeling them into the production of EV components and finished vehicles. While subsidies and tax incentives for EV purchases have been introduced previously, the focus will now shift towards strategically prioritizing products and companies that contribute to the improvement of domestic technological capabilities and industrial clustering. This policy shift is viewed as a crucial step for Indonesia to transition from being merely a resource-exporting country to one with a more advanced manufacturing sector. For domestic manufacturers, it presents an opportunity to accelerate investment in technological innovation.
