Mekong Delta Faces Flood Risk Amid Heavy Rainfall, Disruptions Feared

Can Tho City, a key hub in Vietnam's southern Mekong Delta, is on high alert as heavy rainfall is forecast from September 12th to 14th. According to meteorological authorities, some areas could experience over 150mm of rain, raising concerns about potential urban flooding and disruptions to transportation networks. As of 9 AM on September 12th, the Can Tho City Hydrometeorological Station reported that many parts of the city had experienced showers and thunderstorms in the past 24 hours, with some areas receiving heavy rain, notably Thốt Nốt district recording 84.2mm. Moving forward, regions including Vĩnh Thạnh, Ô Môn, and Thới Hưng are expected to receive between 60mm and 150mm of rain, with some locations potentially exceeding 150mm. This intense rainfall is likely to cause flooding in low-lying areas, low-lying roads in urban centers, potentially hindering public movement, daily life, and even agricultural production. The meteorological authorities have classified the natural disaster risk level associated with this heavy rainfall as 'Level 1' and are urging caution.
