Bamboo Co-op Empowers Zamboanga Sur Schools, Fuels Rural Jobs

RAMON MAGSAYSAY, Zamboanga del Sur — What began nearly two decades ago as a modest local association in Barangay Bobongan here has grown into a major engine driving Zamboanga Peninsula’s sustainable bamboo-based furniture making industry. The Ramon Magsaysay Bamboo Producers Cooperative (RAMAGBA) stands as the region’s sole bamboo processing facility capable of manufacturing engineered bamboo. The cooperative has also been actively contributing to its community. Recently, it donated computers and other equipment to nearby schools. This initiative aims to improve access to education and support skill development for the youth in rural areas. RAMAGBA’s operations are not only supporting schools but also significantly impacting the local economy. Through the processing and manufacturing of bamboo, it provides employment opportunities for many rural residents, contributing to increased income and improved living standards. The furniture manufacturing, in particular, requires skilled craftsmanship and is a vital component in revitalizing the regional economy. In the Philippines, revitalizing local economies and fostering sustainable industrial development are crucial challenges.
