Laos Producer Prices Inch Up in August Amid Agricultural Goods Surge

Laos' producer price index (PPI) rose 0.2 percent in August from a month earlier, marking a reversal from a 0.4 percent decline in July, according to the latest data from the Bank of Laos (BOL). The PPI is a key indicator for future consumer inflation trends. On a year-on-year basis, producer prices in August increased by 7.9 percent, accelerating from a 7.7 percent gain in the previous month. This rise was primarily driven by a significant surge in the prices of agricultural, livestock, and fishery products, which climbed 3.8 percent compared to a 1.5 percent increase in July. The BOL attributed the surge in agricultural prices to prolonged high temperatures during August. Prices of industrial goods, including petroleum and chemical products, remained flat month-on-month. Electricity, gas, and water supply prices saw a 0.9 percent increase. The domestic supply price index, which reflects both producer and import prices, dropped 1.3 percent month-on-month in August. This indicates ongoing challenges for domestic economic stability amidst concerns over global geopolitical risks and energy price volatility. Laos, under its one-party system, pursues economic development with significant influence from its relationships with China and Vietnam.
