Xuan Thuy National Park Enhances Mangrove Honey Brand
Xuan Thuy National Park in Vietnam's northern Ninh Binh province is bolstering its brand for honey produced from mangrove blossoms. This 'nature-friendly' beekeeping model contributes to increased income for local communities and aids in preserving the park's biodiversity.
When mangroves bloom across the coastal wetlands, tens of thousands of bee colonies are brought to Xuan Thuy National Park in the northern province of Ninh Binh, to gather nectar. Produced from the natural blossoms of the mangrove ecosystem, the honey is prized for its distinctive flavour and purity, while providing livelihoods and higher incomes for beekeepers and communities in the park’s buffer zone. The 'nature-friendly' bee farming model brings high income to farmers. This initiative can be interpreted as part of the Vietnamese Communist Party's policy to balance economic development with environmental conservation. Under the one-party system, the government promotes sustainable development models, simultaneously aiming to revitalize local economies and protect natural resources, efforts that are being replicated in various regions across the country. In recent years, initiatives that link biodiversity conservation with local economic revitalization have gained attention in Vietnam. Mangrove honey from Xuan Thuy National Park is a prime example. This honey, truly a 'gift of nature' nurtured by the park's rich ecosystem, aims to enhance its brand value both domestically and internationally due to its high quality. This is also related to Vietnam's strategy to increase the added value of agricultural products and strengthen their competitiveness in the international market as it seeks to expand its export economy. Furthermore, such integration of community-led nature conservation and economic activities reflects Vietnam's pursuit of its own economic development model amidst its complex relationship with China. While influenced by China economically, Vietnam is focusing on fostering sustainable industries by leveraging its own natural resources. Mangrove honey from Xuan Thuy National Park is expected to further increase its value within Vietnam as a successful case of community empowerment and environmental conservation, beyond just being a local specialty.
