Thailand Shortens Tourist Visa Exemption to 30 Days from Sept 15, 2026

Thailand is set to shorten its primary tourist visa exemption period from the current 60 days to 30 days, effective September 15, 2026. This change will impact travelers entering the country on or after this date, requiring them to verify visa requirements and potential extensions based on their planned length of stay. The revised measures were announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Consular Affairs, and were published in the Royal Gazette on August 31, 2026. Previously, many nationalities could enter Thailand for tourism without a pre-arranged visa, receiving permission to stay for up to 60 days. Under the new framework, this exemption period will be halved. The list of countries and territories eligible for visa-free entry has been revised, with 60 countries and territories qualifying for the 30-day exemption. Additionally, a separate 15-day visa exemption will be provided for travelers from Mauritius and Seychelles. Azerbaijan, Belarus, and Serbia will fall under the visa-on-arrival category. Given these differentiated measures based on nationality, it is crucial for travelers to verify the latest visa information specific to their passport before making travel plans. Travelers are advised to check if their nationality is included in the new visa exemption list and, if their stay exceeds 30 days, to secure the appropriate visa type (such as a tourist visa) in advance or confirm extension procedures. The date of entry is also a critical factor; for late-night flights or connecting flights that cross the September 15 date boundary, the date processed at immigration will apply. Immigration authorities indicate that extensions of stay may be granted for up to an additional 30 days, once, subject to conditions, prior application, and approval. While this change may have minimal impact on short-term tourists, it necessitates more thorough preparation for those planning extended stays, family visits, or remote work arrangements.
