Hanoi Faces Temporary Flooding After Heavy Rain, Water Recedes Quickly; Infrastructure Challenges Highlighted

On the afternoon of July 27, Hanoi experienced widespread thunderstorms due to the influence of a southern low-pressure trough combined with converging winds. Many areas recorded rainfall exceeding 40 to over 60mm per hour, causing localized flooding on several streets. According to the Hanoi Urban Infrastructure Management Center, drainage units immediately deployed personnel and equipment to key locations upon the onset of rain. They organized efforts to remove debris, clear waterways, and operate sluice gates and pumping stations to lower water levels and facilitate drainage. The heavy rainfall, concentrated at approximately 50mm within 30 minutes, exceeded the localized collection and drainage capacity of the system. This resulted in flooding on streets such as Hòe Nhai, Phan Huy Ích-Nguyễn Trường Tộ, Nguyễn Thái Học, the La Pho-Thụy Khuê slope, and Alley 42 Giang Văn Minh. The area of Alley 42 Giang Văn Minh, connecting to Alley 100 Đội Cấn, was submerged to a depth of 35-40cm. The center has requested the People's Committees of Tây Hồ and Ngọc Hà wards, along with relevant units, to intensify dredging of the drainage system, deploy mobile pumps at flooded spots, accelerate infrastructure projects, and implement measures to ensure drainage during heavy rains. The center also continues to require units to maintain on-site presence and operate pumping stations to proactively respond to subsequent rainfall events.
