Approximately 3,000 runners participated in Davao City's first-ever trail run, the "DC Trail Ultra." City officials aim to promote the natural beauty of the city and boost tourism and the economy through this sports event.

Davao City will host the DC Trail Ultra on July 26, its first-ever trail running event sanctioned and organized by the city government, drawing approximately 3,000 runners to its mountainous terrain. The event aims to blend sports with tourism, according to Michael Denton Aportadera, Acting Head of the City Sports Development Division. While Davao City is known for its active running scene, city officials recognized the growing trend of exercising in nature, which gained traction around the pandemic. "We want everyone to appreciate the beauty of Davao City beyond the roads," Aportadera stated. The race extends invitations to trail runners from across the Philippines and Southeast Asian countries, with the goal of boosting tourism. Participants are expected to stay for at least a week or two, patronizing local food and experiencing the culture, thereby contributing to the city's economy and tourism sector. The most challenging category is the 50km race, covering a route of 50.85 kilometers with an elevation gain of 2,404 meters. Rudy Comawas Jr., participating in his fifth trail run, has been preparing rigorously with long-distance runs, heat and elevation training, and hikes with a 20kg loaded bag. "This route is extraordinary and requires preparation. In trail running, you cannot be entirely sure of your body's condition, so thorough preparation is essential," he said. Arnie Macañeras, a professional trail runner and team captain for the Philippine Trail Running Association (PhilTRA) National Team, emphasized the importance of consistent training. Having experienced the route himself, he noted its technical difficulty. "If you haven't prepared, you'll really struggle. Ideally, training should be done three or four times a week, not just once," he advised. The DC Trail Ultra also serves as a PhilTRA Championship Qualifier and is officially recognized by the International Trail Running Association (ITRA). The event includes 25km, 12km, and 5km categories, catering to various skill levels. Beyond the competition, participants view trail running as a transformative experience. Niell, who will run the 12km race, expressed excitement about representing Davao City in this inaugural trail event. Other participants shared how trail running has become a way to reconnect with past passions, discover oneself, and find mental therapy. Comawas testified that trail running helped him quit smoking, lose weight, and achieve mental and emotional well-being. City officials anticipate that sports like trail running will foster closer bonds among people and families, promoting healthier lifestyles. Runners echoed the sentiment, "Movement is medicine," and expressed profound appreciation for the natural beauty encountered during the race. Source: MindaNews Philippines (GN)
