Common Crimes Decline, Cybercrimes Surge to New High in Philippines: SWS Survey

MANILA, Philippines — Families reporting victimization from common crimes declined in June from March, though cybercrimes hit a new high, according to the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey. The survey was conducted from June 20 to June 29. Ten percent of families reported falling victim to common crimes in June, a decrease from 12 percent in March, the survey found. This suggests a reduction in incidents such as theft, breaking and entering, car theft, and physical assault. However, the landscape for cybercrimes has shifted dramatically. The percentage of households reporting victimization from cybercrimes, including online scams, identity theft, and hacking, reached an all-time high. While specific figures were not released, this surge highlights the growing threat associated with increasing digitalization. These findings suggest a potential shift in the nature of crime in the Philippines, moving from physical spaces to digital ones. Authorities are urged to enhance cybersecurity measures and public awareness campaigns, in addition to traditional law enforcement efforts. Special attention is needed for groups like Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), who are often active online.
