PM Hun Manet Highlights Value of Peace on Int'l Day, Cambodia to Host Francophonie Summit

Prime Minister Hun Manet of Cambodia has issued a message marking the International Day of Peace, emphasizing the value of peace and honoring the sacrifices made to achieve and maintain it. He stated that peace in Cambodia is not accidental but a result of the nation's painful history and immense sacrifices. The Prime Minister reflected on Cambodia's turbulent past, from its independence from France in 1953, the tragedies under the Pol Pot regime, to the end of the civil war following the 1991 Paris Peace Accords. He particularly lauded the historical achievement of the "Win-Win Policy" spearheaded by former Prime Minister Techo Hun Sen, which successfully ended a civil war lasting nearly three decades, leading to complete peace and national unity. Touching upon the 2026 International Day of Peace theme, "Invest in peace: for everyone, everywhere, and at all times," Prime Minister Hun Manet highlighted the significance of the 20th Francophonie Summit, which Cambodia will host in mid-November. This summit will bring together leaders from 93 French-speaking countries and regions to discuss de-escalating geopolitical tensions, promoting inclusive and robust development, and strengthening multilateral cooperation for lasting peace. He noted that Cambodia's peace, maintained for 26 years amidst border conflicts and external pressures, requires constant recognition of its importance. Economically, while Cambodia's economy is projected to grow by 4.1% in 2026, the government's top priority is to translate this growth into job creation, increased income, skill development, and improved access to essential public services, thereby enhancing the livelihoods of its citizens. Furthermore, Prime Minister Hun Manet highlighted Cambodia's active contribution to UN peacekeeping missions, having deployed over 10,000 peacekeepers to 10 countries since 2006. He reiterated Cambodia's commitment to upholding core principles such as respect for sovereignty, adherence to international law, and peaceful dispute resolution, all aimed at ensuring the well-being of its people and sustainable socio-economic development.
