Cambodia Welcomes Increased International Scrutiny on Thailand Border Conflict

PHNOM PENH, Sept 8, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia’s government spokesman Pen Bona said Tuesday that international media coverage and diplomatic initiatives are drawing growing attention to the situation along the country’s border with Thailand. Bona noted that prominent foreign journalists have repeatedly reported on developments along the frontier, documenting the impact of the conflict on civilians. Reports have described Thai military forces as reinforcing positions and highlighted the plight of displaced Cambodians forced to abandon homes and livelihoods. He said some journalists characterised Thailand’s military actions as offensive operations rather than self‑defence, alleging the use of ground, naval and air assets in attacks against Cambodia. Bona also referred to photographs showing civilian suffering and damage to Preah Vihear Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to Bona, continued international coverage, combined with Cambodia’s diplomatic policy of being “quiet but not silent,” has helped bring the border issue to wider global attention. French journalist Jean Luc Moreau Deleris displayed images from the frontier at an international photojournalism exhibition, aiming to highlight what Cambodia describes as Thai aggression. Meanwhile, UN rapporteur Andrews underscored the plight of displaced civilians, saying many reported their homes had been bombed, bulldozed and destroyed. He stressed that under international law, those displaced by armed conflict have the right to return safely and resume livelihoods without obstruction. Separately, the Inter‑Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference hosted in Phnom Penh in late August adopted the Phnom Penh Declaration, reaffirming commitment to international law and peaceful settlement of disputes. Cambodia says these statements and initiatives demonstrate rising concern and strengthen calls for a resolution based on international law.
