Sumatran tigers (Panthera tigris sumatrae), Tapanuli orangutans (Pongo tapanuliensis), Sumatran tapirs (Tapirus indicus), and sun bears (Helarctos malayanus) are losing their roaming grounds. Beyond the physical threats to wildlife, this practice also poses risks of soil and water contamination due to residues from fertilizers and chemical pesticides routinely used in palm oil plantations. Furthermore, the land's capacity to absorb carbon has sharply declined compared to when it was primary tropical forest. The B50 policy is set to take effect in July 2026, requiring massive amounts of crude palm oil (CPO) to meet its demands. Ramadhan commented, "North Sumatra is now at a crossroads between enforcing environmental justice and achieving national energy ambitions. Post-land conflict restoration efforts appear stalled, while pressure to open new land for CPO quotas continues."
