Takeo Province Distributes Trash Bins to Pagodas, Seeks Monks' Help in Environmental Education

In Takeo Province, southern Cambodia, initiatives are underway to promote environmental beautification and sanitation awareness. On September 21, 2026, Governor Vei Samnang attended a ceremony for the donation of 1,041 trash bins to 347 pagodas across the province. These bins were supported by the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Cults and Religion. At the ceremony, held at Wat Choeu Thol Thrang pagoda in Don Keo city, the governor requested the monks to further expand environmental sanitation education among devotees throughout the province. Specifically, he expressed expectations for enhanced awareness activities through sermons and other religious events. Governor Vei Samnang stated that the donation of trash bins would significantly contribute to maintaining the cleanliness, environment, and aesthetics of pagodas. He emphasized that this would lead to the purification of 'body, mind, and environment,' enabling pagodas to welcome devotees from both within Cambodia and abroad during the traditional Pchum Ben festival in a cleaner and healthier setting. Furthermore, the governor expressed his hope that pagodas, by serving as exemplary models of good environmental sanitation, would inspire devotees to follow suit. Coupled with educational efforts by monks, this is expected to further elevate the environmental consciousness of the residents. This initiative suggests that Buddhist pagodas in Cambodia can play a crucial role not only as religious institutions but also in community environmental education. The aim is to leverage the opportunities when many citizens gather at pagodas to increase their engagement with environmental issues. This can also be seen as part of the Cambodian government's efforts towards achieving its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
