The Ministry of Interior in Cambodia has temporarily suspended Run Ratna, Director of the Tourism Police, pending investigation into allegations of illegal detention. General Sath Thet, Director General of the National Police, appointed Lieutenant General Bun Da, Director of the Central Order Department, on July 24, 2026, to oversee the daily operations of the Tourism Police Department in Ratna's absence. The suspension follows a complaint filed on July 17, 2026, by Hout Sithirach, a 25-year-old male residing in Phnom Penh. Sithirach alleges that Run Ratna and two accomplices unlawfully detained him, infringing upon his personal liberty. The complaint also details accusations of extortion and refusing to release an individual held unlawfully. In his complaint, Hout Sithirach is seeking compensation totaling $705,000 USD, comprising $505,000 USD for damages and $200,000 USD for moral damages, from Run Ratna and his alleged associates. This development raises concerns regarding the conduct of law enforcement officials and the protection of citizens' rights in Cambodia. The Tourism Police play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of tourists and enforcing relevant laws within the country.
