NLD strongly condemns Myanmar junta’s destruction of General Aung San statues

Mizzima The Central Working Committee of the National League for Democracy (NLD) issued a statement 8 July strongly condemning the military junta’s ongoing destruction of General Aung San statues nationwide, saying junta forces have destroyed approximately ten of the monuments in June and July alone. The statement said the junta and its subordinates — including the military, police, and municipal staff — are systematically destroying statues that were built through public donations in compliance with legal regulations and procedures, carrying out the demolitions under cover of darkness. This destruction is not merely vandalism of public property but a deliberate assault on Myanmar’s national identity, historical symbols, and the collective faith and hopes of the people, the NLD said. General Aung San is revered by the public as an exemplary leader — both the architect of Myanmar’s independence who unified the Union, and the founder of the armed forces, the statement added. The NLD warned that those ordering and carrying out the destruction are undermining the spirit of the Union, and said it would pursue measures to hold them accountable.
