Flooding in Bago City, 13 basic education schools temporarily closed

In Bago City, flooding occurred on September 2 due to the rising water level of the Bago River and continuous rainfall, forcing the temporary closure of 13 basic education schools. It was also learned that flooding has occurred in some parts of the old Bago-Yangon-Mandalay road. According to the release from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, as of 12:30 PM on September 2, the Bago River's water level had reached 917 centimeters, exceeding the warning level of 880 centimeters for Bago City, surpassing the warning level by 37 centimeters (approximately over 1 foot). Furthermore, a local resident stated that flooding has begun in the road sections near Juinsayar, in front of Seisai, and in front of Medaw Monastery on the old Bago-Yangon-Mandalay road, causing difficulties for vehicle traffic. "The water had not submerged this area yesterday. It only started to overflow today. When I checked last night, there was no water yet. Now, it has become quite difficult for cars to pass. The water level has also exceeded the warning level within Bago City and has risen considerably. If the rain intensifies further, the situation could become more worrying, and it will not be easy for cars to pass through. I would also like to inform people to use the bypass road," he said. Due to continuous rainfall and rising river water levels, floods have occurred in the low-lying wards, roads, and some areas of Bago City. Infiltration of water has also occurred in some areas of Kalyani Ward, Myothit Ward, the lower valleys of Mazin and Thayet Taw, Zai Taung, Mahamyain, and the inner wards on the Aung Hospital side. According to the forecast from the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, the Bago River's water level may continue to rise by about one foot in the next day and is expected to remain above Bago City's warning level. Due to this situation, Bago City officials have issued a warning to the public in areas near the Bago River and low-lying areas that may be affected by flooding to continue monitoring the rising river water levels and rainfall conditions, and to make preparations in advance if the flooding worsens. It was also learned that in Shwekyin City and Madauk City in the eastern part of Bago Region, the respective river water levels have exceeded their warning levels, and flooding is occurring.
