Schools and health centers reopen in flood-affected Chaungzon Township

Some schools and rural health centers in Chaungzon Township, where water levels have receded, have reopened. It is reported that the Myanmar Fire Brigade and relevant departments are collaborating on school cleaning efforts to enable the remaining schools to reopen. Due to heavy rainfall and mountain runoff, the Attaran River overflowed, causing floods in Chaungzon city and villages along the riverbanks for almost the entire month of August. As a result of these floods, 35 basic education schools and 7 rural health centers in Chaungzon Township were temporarily closed. Although 5 high schools, 11 middle schools, and 19 primary schools in Chaungzon Township were temporarily closed due to flooding, water levels have receded since the beginning of September. Therefore, the primary school (Koppye) in Koppye village, Kyaukpyan village tract, Chaungzon Township, and the primary school (Koddone) in Koddone village, Koppanaw village tract, have been reopened since September 4, according to an individual close to the Township Education Department. The same individual further stated, "Additionally, the primary school (Kadar Village North) in Kadar village tract, the middle school (Khrom) in Khrom village tract, the primary school (Tana West) in Tarana village tract, and Basic Education Primary School No. 2 and Primary School No. 1 in Shin Saw Pu ward have also been reopened since September 7." He also said that in schools that were flooded during the flood, after the water receded, the mud and silt remaining in the classrooms are being cleaned by the Myanmar Fire Services Department, relevant departments, teachers, and local residents. Furthermore, it is reported from an individual close to the Township Health Department that the Lakayine rural health center in Lakayine village tract, the Polaw rural health center in Attaran village tract, and the maternal and child health center in Yan Myo Aung ward, Chaungzon city, which were temporarily closed during the flood, have been reopened since September 7, and the remaining 4 rural health centers will also be reopened after cleaning is completed. It is reported that due to the overflow of the Attaran River caused by heavy rainfall and mountain runoff, over 6,600 houses in 15 wards/village tracts, including 2 wards in Chaungzon city, were flooded, and over 32,000 people from 6,697 households were affected by the flood.
