Palace Clarifies President's Serenade Amidst Heavy Rains Criticism

Amidst widespread flooding and heavy rainfall caused by the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) across the Philippines, a video circulating on social media has drawn criticism, showing President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. allegedly serenading First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos while the country grappled with the disaster. The video, shared by former Vigan City Mayor Jose Singson Jr., depicts the President greeting and singing to his wife. It has garnered negative reactions from many netizens, who criticized the gesture as seemingly insensitive given the ongoing crisis. However, Palace Press Officer Claire Castro moved to clarify the situation, stating that the narrative was twisted by detractors and obstructionists. "The serenade from the President, for the First Lady, is not during the height of the strong rains, it was not during the height of the floods," Castro said on Tuesday. Castro explained that the video was taken in the evening, after the President had already concluded his official duties for the day. She acknowledged that it was understandable why some people might perceive the gesture as insensitive if that was the narrative they were fed. "If the President did sing, this is for his wife and a few close family members; it is just a few hours given by the President for his family," she added.
