Cambodia Warns of Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds Over the Weekend

The Cambodian Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology has announced a forecast indicating the potential for thunderstorms and gusty winds across the country for three days, from September 11th to 13th. This is due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea, and South China Sea influencing the southwest monsoon that affects the Mekong River Basin, the Cambodian sea, and the Kingdom of Cambodia. The meteorological conditions are expected to impact the following regions: 1. Plains Region: Temperatures will range from a minimum of 25°C to a maximum of 36°C. Winds will blow from the southwest and southeast at an average speed of 3 meters per second. Provinces and the capital including Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Poipet, Kampong Cham, Takeo, Kandal, and Phnom Penh may experience rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, covering 60% of the land area. 2. High Plateau Region: Temperatures will range from a minimum of 24°C to a maximum of 35°C. Winds will blow from the southwest and west at an average speed of 5 meters per second. Areas such as Kampong Speu, Pailin, Oudorm Mean Chey, Preah Vihear, Kratie, Stung Treng, Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri, the Dangrek Mountains, and the Cardamom Mountains may experience rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, covering 70% of the land area. 3. Coastal Region: Temperatures will range from a minimum of 25°C to a maximum of 34°C. Winds will blow from the southwest and southeast at an average speed of 3 meters per second. Provinces and areas including Koh Kong, Sihanoukville, Kampot, Kep, and the Bokor Mountains may experience rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, covering 70% of the land area. Sea waves are expected to be between 0.50 meters and 1.70 meters in height. This forecast could potentially impact Cambodia's agriculture and infrastructure, with particular caution advised in rural areas. Additionally, concerns exist regarding damage from strong winds in coastal regions.
