People Drink From Ancient Well for Good Fortune on Quang Trung's Death Anniversary

Gia Lai Province - Thousands of residents and tourists flocked to the Quang Trung Museum (Tay Son commune) on September 10 to attend the ceremony commemorating Emperor Quang Trung. Many brought incense, flowers, banh chung, and offerings, performing rituals to honor the "king in plain clothes." A tradition of the anniversary is drinking from the ancient well within the museum grounds, believed to be part of the Tây Sơn family's old garden. Local folklore suggests the well holds sacred elements tied to the Tây Sơn family's life. Therefore, on the anniversary, many lined up to drink the well water, wash their faces, or take some home, wishing for peace and good fortune. After the memorial rituals concluded, the organizing committee invited attendees and visitors to dine in the culinary area. The Tây Sơn Uprising movement, emerging in the latter half of the 18th century, is associated with the careers of the three brothers Nguyễn Nhạc, Nguyễn Huệ, and Nguyễn Lữ. Among them, Emperor Quang Trung - Nguyễn Huệ stood out as a brilliant and undefeated general. He led the Tây Sơn army from a peasant rebellion to a force that liberated the nation and unified the country after more than 200 years of division. Born in 1753 in Kiên Mỹ village (former Tây Sơn district, Bình Định province), Quang Trung - Nguyễn Huệ dedicated his short 39-year life to the cause of national liberation. He passed away on the 29th day of the 7th lunar month in 1792.
