Shop buildings around Aung San Stadium in Yangon being demolished

It has been learned that shop buildings around Aung San Stadium in Mingalar Taung Nyunt Township, Yangon, are being demolished. "The demolition has not been going on for very long," said one of the local residents. It has been learned that a coordination meeting was held on June 26 at the Pattamaya Hall in the National Stadium (1) in Thuwunna, Thangyan Gyi Township, Yangon Region, to discuss the demolition of old government-owned buildings within Aung San Stadium and their sale by auction. At the meeting, the chairman of the auction committee and Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Sports, U Nyi Nyi, delivered an address, and officials from the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs discussed the history of Aung San Stadium, its location, the buildings to be demolished, the formation of working committees and sub-committees, the progress of systematic auction and demolition of old buildings and sports-related buildings, and the coordination and collaboration on the auction of old government-owned buildings and the clearance of shops. It was learned in late November 2025 that the Aung San Stadium in downtown Yangon will undergo major renovations and be rebuilt as a stadium with a capacity of 25,000 spectators. It has been learned that the Aung San Stadium Renovation and Construction Committee has been formed to rebuild the Aung San Stadium into a venue that can accommodate 25,000 spectators. It has been learned that the committee will be chaired by the Union Minister of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, with the Union Minister of the Ministry of Construction serving as vice-chairman, and the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs serving as secretary. In 2022, the stadium was visited by the current State Administration Council Chairman, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, who instructed that it be upgraded to be able to host Olympic Games. The stadium was formerly known as BAA (The Burma Athletics Association) and was renamed Aung San Stadium on October 17, 1953, after independence, in honor of General Aung San. The stadium was constructed starting in 1908 and completed in 1910, with a 400-meter track built in 1935. The stadium hosted the Southeast Asian Peninsular Games in 1961 and 1969.
