ICRC Representative Confirms Meeting with State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has announced that its Permanent Representative to Myanmar, Arnaud de Baecque, met with State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on August 3. The meeting was conducted in accordance with ICRC's standards and procedures for visiting and inspecting persons deprived of liberty, and the ICRC representative was able to meet and speak with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi separately, according to the ICRC's statement. When the Ayeyarwaddy Times contacted the ICRC for details about the discussions during the meeting, the organization did not provide further information. The ICRC is a neutral, impartial, and independent organization that carries out humanitarian tasks in accordance with the Geneva Conventions of 1949. Its statement also noted that it works worldwide to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and violence, and to alleviate their suffering. This meeting is one of the rare instances where a representative from an international organization has met with State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been detained since the military coup in 2021. The ICRC has also informed that it continues to cooperate with all relevant organizations to gain increased access, including continued access to prisons and detention facilities within Myanmar.
