Cambodian National Assembly President Arrives in Hanoi for Official Visit to Vietnam

President of the Cambodian National Assembly Samdech Khuon Sudary is paying an official visit to Vietnam from July 27-29. The visit aims to deepen people-to-people bonds, particularly through the legislative framework, and fulfill agreements reached by the two parties during their high-level meeting in Phnom Penh in February. The visit underscores the importance both sides attach to strengthening political trust and promoting comprehensive cooperation, which will boost parliamentary cooperation, mutual understanding, and the sharing of legislative experience. Beni Sukadis, Senior Coordinator at the Indonesian Institute for Defence and Strategic Studies (LESPERSSI), noted that Vietnam has demonstrated its ability to build consensus, foster cooperation, and maintain balance amid an increasingly complex geopolitical environment in the region. Domestically, the National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee continued its fourth session on July 27, reviewing a draft law amending and supplementing provisions to nine military and defence laws to ensure consistency across Vietnam’s legal framework. Party General Secretary and State President To Lam stated that achievements in inspections mark a significant shift from viewing them solely as a tool to detect violations to recognizing them as an important mechanism for improving institutions and strengthening national governance. Several draft laws have also been added to the 2026 agenda for discussion and approval at the second session of the 16th NA, scheduled for October. Regarding Vietnam's role in ASEAN, Ambassador Ton Thi Ngoc Huong said Vietnamese ministries and agencies are developing plans to realize the vision and shaping ASEAN-wide monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to fortify cross-sector and cross-pillar coordination. This visit by the Cambodian National Assembly President highlights Vietnam's commitment to regional stability and cooperation, and is part of its diplomatic strategy to strengthen ties with neighboring countries within its one-party system. As Vietnam continues its economic growth, it seeks to contribute to regional stability and its own development by deepening cooperation with its neighbors while navigating geopolitical challenges.
