Kampong Thom Authorities Seize and Destroy Illegal Fishing Gear, Release Fry AKP Kampong Thom, September 18, 2026 -- Major General Som Sun, Commander of the Regional Military Operations Area and Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial Commission for Protection, Prevention, and Suppression of Natural Resource Crimes in Kampong Thom, accompanied by Mr. Sun Sopheap, Deputy Governor of Kampong Svay District, on September 17, 2026, led a combined force comprising local authorities and specialized fisheries administration officials in an operation to crack down on illegal fishing gear in the "Ang 2000" and "Ang 800" areas located in Kompong Kor Commune, Kampong Svay District, and a part of Sreiyos Commune, Stung Sen City, Kampong Thom Province. Major General Som Sun stated that the results of the operation in the Ang 2000 and Ang 800 areas on this day included the destruction of 10 illegal curtain nets, measuring 300 meters in length, and 2 illegal gillnets with excessively fine mesh, measuring 600 meters in length (exceeding the legal length by approximately 200 meters), along with 400 wooden stakes. Additionally, approximately 35 kilograms of various types of fish fry were released back into the natural lake. On this occasion, Major General Som Sun instructed all combined forces responsible for the protection, prevention, and suppression of illegal fishing in the geographical areas of Kompong Kor and Phat Sanday Communes, Kampong Svay District, to continue to pay close attention to the suppression of illegal fishing with a high sense of responsibility, especially to prevent the recurrence of curtain nets, as they hinder the growth of our fish resources. Concurrently, Major General Som Sun urged specialized authorities to investigate and identify individuals who use electric fishing gear to apply legal procedures without exception. During this event, Major General Som Sun handed over 360 liters of fuel and some food supplies to Lieutenant Colonel Hem Thorn, Head of the Light Command for the Suppression of Illegal Fishing in Phat Sanday and Kompong Kor Communes, Kampong Svay District, to continue their activities in protecting, preventing, and suppressing illegal fishing effectively and achieving further success.
