Thai and Cambodian Journalists Discuss Border Tensions, Urge Responsible Reporting

Nearly a year after fighting on the Thailand-Cambodia border, a ceasefire remains in place, but normal relations remain distant. Land crossings are still closed, distrust persists, and online hostility continues to shape public perceptions in both countries. Against that backdrop, a Thai journalist met with the editor-in-chief of Cambodianess in Bangkok for a rare cross-border discussion on how journalists can report the conflict without deepening the divide. The meeting was facilitated by the Bangkok-based Asia Centre. The Cambodian media executive noted that while strong public sentiments remain, the situation is not as bad as during the conflict. Tensions can erupt occasionally, particularly through social media and media reports, rather than through actual interactions between ordinary people. Air travel continues, despite land borders remaining closed. He emphasized that pursuing a diplomatic breakthrough, preventing the recurrence of armed clashes, and ensuring restraint from both sides are crucial for future relations. He stressed that discouraging online slander, personal attacks, and the spread of hatred is a responsibility that may fall on private citizens, especially those who care about humanity and peace. Regarding media reporting, the executive pointed out that the tendency for media in both countries to focus on one-sided, negative news fuels animosity and exacerbates nationalism. Some media outlets and influencers are increasingly leaning towards more extreme content for clicks and revenue. To improve this situation, he proposed that journalists focus on producing balanced, investigated reports. It would also be valuable for media organizations from both countries to communicate more frequently and develop practical approaches.
