Indonesia Establishes New University to Cultivate Future Leaders

A new educational institution, the Universitas Republik Indonesia (URI), has been established in Indonesia, spearheaded by Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto. The university aims to cultivate future leaders and will focus on training civil servants and executives for state-owned enterprises (BUMN). Donny Ermawan, appointed as the Governor of URI, explained that the institution will consolidate and integrate existing educational systems, from primary to higher education, and government agencies. Specifically, it will collaborate with the existing Garuda Excellence School and integrate with the National Institute of Public Administration (LAN). Plans are in place to establish 10 campuses across the country in the future. According to Ermawan, URI will contribute to the development of human resources for the future government and state-owned enterprises. Under URI, there will be a National Education Management Agency, an Excellence School Management Agency, a Higher Education Management Agency, and the National Institute of Public Administration. The latter, which has primarily focused on training civil servants (ASN), will expand its functions to include training for state-owned enterprise (BUMN) employees. URI has already begun training 399 new employees from state-owned enterprises, focusing on developing leaders with character and integrity. The university's operational costs will be fully covered by the state budget (APBN). While the URI campus is slated for construction on former PTPN plantation land in Bogor, its activities will temporarily be housed in the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises building in Jakarta. Graduates of URI are expected to receive bachelor's degrees, similar to those from conventional universities. Prasetyo Hadi, the interim State Secretary, stated that URI is being prepared to nurture future national leaders by adopting models from leadership education institutions in various countries, such as France's École nationale d'administration (ENA), now the Institut National du Public Service (INSP). Hadi emphasized the importance of such specialized training for government officials, BUMN executives, and regional heads, expecting them to possess not only technical skills but also a strong national perspective and a spirit of service to the nation and its people.
