Glass-Breaking Car Thief Apprehended in Da Nang

A man has been arrested in Da Nang, a central Vietnamese city, for repeatedly smashing the windows of parked cars to steal valuables. The suspect, identified as Mai Văn Lạc, 41, a resident of Tây Hồ commune, is accused of targeting nearly 10 vehicles. According to the police, Lạc used tools to break into cars parked on the street, stealing property. Since mid-June, the police had been receiving reports of car break-ins where windows of vehicles parked outdoors at night were smashed. Authorities identified the perpetrator as having a professional modus operandi and began investigating individuals with prior criminal records for theft in the area. Lạc, who has a history of seven previous convictions for theft, had only recently completed a three-year prison sentence on January 21st. During interrogation, Lạc confessed that he needed money for personal expenses and prepared screwdrivers and pliers, concealing his identity to carry out the thefts. He reportedly operated around midnight daily, seeking out cars parked in deserted, unguarded locations. From July 20th until his arrest, Lạc claims to have committed nearly 10 offenses. In the most recent incident, in the early morning of July 26th, he broke the windows of four cars in the Thanh Khê district, stealing 7 million Vietnamese Dong (approximately $285 USD) and 101 US dollars. This case highlights ongoing security concerns in popular tourist destinations like Da Nang. As car ownership increases with Vietnam's economic growth, crime prevention measures are becoming increasingly crucial. The Vietnamese government, operating under a one-party system, prioritizes maintaining social order, and the apprehension of criminals like Lạc is seen as vital for ensuring public safety and security.
