Negros Occidental Disposes of Over 111 Metric Tons of Decades-Old Medical Waste

Bacolod City — Over 111 metric tons of hazardous medical waste, accumulated for more than three decades in four government-run hospitals in Negros Occidental, were removed and transported to a Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-accredited treatment facility between June and August this year, provincial officials said. Provincial Administrator Rayfrando Diaz stated that the disposal of this long-standing medical waste addresses significant environmental contamination and public health risks. The waste contained infectious materials and hazardous chemicals, posing threats to soil, water sources, and community health. This initiative is part of the province's efforts to tackle its environmental challenges. In many parts of the Philippines, particularly in provincial areas, the modernization of medical infrastructure and waste management systems is a pressing issue. Lack of resources and expertise often leads to delays in processing such aged waste. The successful disposal in Negros Occidental marks a step towards addressing a persistent problem.
