Cambodia: Accommodation Providers Join Forces Against Online Scams
In Cambodia, hotels and other accommodation providers are increasingly cooperating with government efforts to eradicate online scams. The national police are intensifying awareness campaigns to protect citizens from fraud.
In Cambodia, hotels and other accommodation providers are showing a willingness to cooperate with the government's efforts to eradicate online scams. Srey Sophak, the general affairs manager at Yunphen Hotel in the 7 Makara district of Phnom Penh, expressed her intention to contribute to the government's cybercrime countermeasures by constantly monitoring suspicious activities as a manager of a facility that hosts both domestic and international guests. The "Kapea Scams" application, recently launched for trial by the National Police, is expected to further enhance the public's understanding of scam tactics and help prevent them from becoming victims of online fraud. Sophak pointed out that online scam methods are diverse, including impersonation scams via phone calls and schemes that falsely claim prize winnings. Recently, Major General Sok Nity, Director of the Cybercrime Department of the National Police, highlighted common online scam tactics such as fraud in goods transactions, hacking of social media and bank accounts, investment scams, and romance scams. According to the Major General, criminals are also impersonating relatives, private company employees, or government officials, and using traditional telecommunication systems (mobile phones) to contact people. They may falsely claim that a traffic accident has occurred and demand payment to resolve the issue, thus avoiding further complications. By cooperating in disseminating this information, accommodation providers are expected to help more citizens become aware of scam tactics and prevent them from falling victim.
