Yunnan-Bali Sister-Province Friendship Deepens Through Two Decades of Organic Rice Project
Yunnan Province, China, and Bali Province, Indonesia, have fostered over two decades of friendship through an organic rice cultivation project since their sister-province relationship was established in 2003. Local farmer Wayan, initially hesitant about farming without chemical fertilizers, acquired techniques in organic composting and bio-pesticides through training. In the first season, his organic rice sold for more than double the price of conventional rice, boosting his income by approximately 30%, with yields remaining consistent. He has become a "model organic farmer" in his village, inspiring 23 households to join the program. Furthermore, the project is expanding to meet community needs. Recent dialogues with residents revealed a desire for streetlights to ensure safe nighttime travel and provide play areas for children. Consequently, the third phase of the project plans to increase organic rice cultivation area and install solar-powered streetlights. These lights will incorporate Chinese cultural elements, serving both practical and cultural exchange purposes. This "Heart-to-Heart Rice" project reflects Yunnan Province's international cooperation in livelihood projects. From 2022 to 2025, 187 "Heart-to-Heart Connectivity • Yunnan in Action" projects have been implemented across 24 countries, primarily in Southeast Asia, South Asia, and the Indian Ocean region.
