Chiang Rai Shop Owner Foils 600,000 Meth Shipping Plot

CHIANG RAI – A quick-thinking parcel shop owner in Chiang Rai, Thailand, played a crucial role in thwarting a major drug smuggling operation on Wednesday morning, leading to the arrest of two suspects and the seizure of approximately 600,000 methamphetamine pills. The incident occurred around 11:45 a.m. in the Wiang Chai District. Two individuals attempted to ship five large packages, falsely claiming they contained local honey. However, the shop owner, familiar with previous shipments from the suspects, noticed the unusually heavy weight of the boxes, which raised an immediate red flag. Trusting their instincts, the owner contacted the local police. Upon the arrival of officers, the two suspects attempted to flee, splitting up in opposite directions. Their escape was quickly hampered by a large community meeting taking place in the nearby Wiang Thong village hall. District Chief Bordin Thiamphakdi and Village Headman Songkran Kaewkham, along with other local leaders, paused their meeting to assist the police in surrounding and apprehending the fleeing men without incident. Following the successful capture, police opened the five heavy packages to discover the massive stash of illegal drugs. Investigators identified the suspects as residents of the Huai Chomphu and Mae Yao areas. They are currently in custody and undergoing intense questioning as authorities work to dismantle the broader drug-smuggling network.
