NBI Arrests Alleged 'Identity Thief' in P470,000 Online Scam

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has arrested a woman suspected of online scamming, who allegedly used another person's identity to defraud victims of more than P470,000. The suspect reportedly created fake accounts on various social media platforms using an individual’s photos. The arrest was made during an entrapment operation in Santa Maria. The NBI identified and apprehended the suspect after a prolonged investigation, following complaints from victims. Seized items are believed to include smartphones and computers used in the scam. This incident highlights the rise of online scams in the Philippines and the increasing sophistication of their methods. Identity theft scams, particularly those using social media, are prone to deceiving victims who tend to trust the perpetrators, leading to financial losses. The government has been urging strengthened countermeasures, as scams targeting Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) continue to occur.
