Laos and Thailand Reaffirm Border Security and Defense Cooperation

Laos and Thailand have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation in border security and defense. Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone received General Adun Bunthamcharoen, Minister of Defence of the Kingdom of Thailand, and his delegation at the Prime Minister’s Office on September 9, 2026. The Thai minister was on an official visit to the Lao PDR to attend the 30th General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting between Laos and Thailand in Vientiane. Prime Minister Sonexay welcomed the delegation, stating that the visit would contribute to strengthening the long-standing good-neighborly relations between the two governments, peoples, and armed forces. He called on the militaries of both nations to further enhance friendly relations through regular exchanges of delegations at various levels and increased sharing of experiences, particularly in logistics and military support services. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of continued coordination to maintain peace and security along the common border and to combat illegal immigration, transnational crime, cyber and telecommunications-related crimes, human trafficking, smuggling, and drug trafficking. He encouraged the GBC to continue its meetings and effectively utilize existing cooperation mechanisms and channels at all levels. He also urged for continued efforts to support the demarcation of remaining border areas to prevent unsettled regions from being exploited to cause security disturbances. Prime Minister Sonexay also conveyed his greetings to the Prime Minister of Thailand. In response, General Adun expressed appreciation for the warm welcome from the Lao side and reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to working closely with the Lao Ministry of National Defence to address outstanding issues, exchange experiences, and implement the Prime Minister’s guidance. He stated that such cooperation would further strengthen friendship and cooperation between Laos and Thailand. He also conveyed his condolences over the passing of Xaysomphone Phomvihane, former President of the National Assembly of the Lao PDR. This high-level meeting underscores Laos' focus on bolstering regional security through collaboration with its neighbors. In the context of its one-party system, Laos prioritizes social stability and maintains close ties with China and Vietnam, while pragmatically strengthening practical cooperation with countries like Thailand to manage border security and foster economic development. Addressing unresolved border demarcation issues is crucial for mitigating potential friction points and contributing to overall regional stability.
