Vietnam Eyes Regional Maritime Hub Amidst Port Efficiency Gains

Vietnam is enhancing its international standing in maritime transport, aiming to establish itself as a major regional maritime hub. The Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2025, released jointly by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence, ranked Cai Mep Port 11th and Hai Phong Port 13th, marking their second consecutive year among the world's top 20 most efficient container ports. This achievement aligns with the government's strategy to maintain core capabilities in vessel design, building, repair, conversion, and technical maintenance. These capabilities are crucial for ensuring resilience against supply chain disruptions, market volatility, and emergencies. The General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam has emphasized the importance of strengthening these areas. Hai Phong City is accelerating experimental initiatives to become a regional maritime hub. The city is implementing innovative approaches in infrastructure development, such as the "Hoa Phuong Do" (Flamboyant Flower) premium train operating between Hanoi and Hai Phong. Since its launch in May 2025, this train has completed nearly 3,000 trips, carrying over 1.33 million passengers. As a driver of economic growth, durian accounts for a significant portion of fruit and vegetable export revenue, estimated at 35-40%. Additionally, the increasing number of international retailers and importers choosing Ho Chi Minh City as a sourcing destination underscores its transformation into a regional procurement hub. In terms of investment environment, the Da Nang Hi-Tech Park and Industrial Zones Authority has finalized administrative procedures in accordance with the special mechanisms and policies of Free Trade Zones (FTZs), preparing for their official operations. Furthermore, in the aviation sector, Vietjet Air is offering Economy tickets from 0 VND on direct flights between Vietnam and Sri Lanka, aiming to expand passenger transport. According to Paul Geaney, President and Chief Commercial Officer of Avolon, Vietnam's aviation market has experienced extraordinary growth of 121% over the past decade. Vietnam adheres to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), an international legal framework, to ensure a balance of interests in global maritime activities.
