Bhutan's UN Membership: A Diplomatic Feat 55 Years On

In 1971, Bhutan joined the United Nations, a diplomatic triumph for a small South Asian nation amidst regional turmoil. The country's application, submitted in December 1970 by King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk, sought the sovereign equality offered by the global body. The King emphasized the UN's proven value to small and developing nations. Bhutan's accession was remarkable for securing unanimous support from regional rivals India and Pakistan in the UN Security Council. Japan, then a non-permanent member, also approved, citing cultural ties. Even China (Republic of China) and the Soviet Union voted in favor, showcasing Bhutan's adept diplomacy in a complex geopolitical landscape. Today, 55 years later, Bhutan champions 'Gross National Happiness' and sustainable development, graduating from LDC status in 2023 and promoting green growth. Despite limited formal diplomatic ties with permanent Security Council members, Bhutan maintains a distinct international presence through its UN engagement.
