Southeast Asia's Most Stressed Cities Ranked: Jakarta 41st, Vietnam Cities Lead

A 2023 study by William Russell on the world's most stressed cities identified several urban centers in Southeast Asia as facing significant stress levels. According to Seasia Stats, the research evaluated a range of factors including pollution, availability of green spaces, sanitation, financial pressures, cost of living, public safety, and suicide rates. These indicators were then synthesized into a composite stress score on a scale of 0 to 10. Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam emerged as the most stressed city in Southeast Asia, achieving a score of 5.77 and securing the 13th position globally. Hanoi, also in Vietnam, followed closely with a score of 5.64, placing it 18th worldwide. Manila, the capital of the Philippines, was ranked 19th globally with a stress score of 5.61. As one of the largest metropolitan regions in Southeast Asia, Manila contends with numerous urban challenges such as severe traffic congestion, pervasive pollution, high population density, and an elevated cost of living. Bangkok, Thailand, registered a stress score of 4.75, positioning it at 40th place globally. Jakarta, Indonesia, was not far behind, scoring 4.72 and ranking 41st worldwide. Both Bangkok and Jakarta are major economic centers, characterized by their large populations, intricate transportation systems, and high levels of urban activity. Further down the list, Phuket, Thailand, obtained a stress score of 4.31, ranking 46th globally. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, recorded the lowest stress score among the seven Southeast Asian cities featured in the study, with a score of 3.99, placing it 51st worldwide. The study emphasizes that these rankings are not a direct assessment of the stress levels, happiness, or mental health of individual residents. Instead, the scores are compiled based on a combination of environmental, economic, social, and security indicators that William Russell utilized to conduct a comparative analysis of various cities across the globe.
