DOTr Offers Free Rides Amid Transport Strike

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) in the Philippines has announced the provision of free rides for commuters affected by a two-day transport strike initiated by the transport group MANIBELA. This measure is in line with the directive of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos to ensure commuters have transportation. The free rides will be available from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, along designated routes. This initiative is being conducted in partnership with the Philippine Coast Guard, the Department of Energy, the Department of Public Works and Highways, the Department of Economy, Planning, and Development, and the Department of Labor and Employment. MANIBELA began its strike on Wednesday to protest a significant oil price hike that took effect on Tuesday. Fuel price fluctuations are a critical issue for the transport sector in the Philippines, directly impacting operational costs. This strike reflects the industry's grievances regarding these economic pressures.
