Cambodia, Romania Agree to Boost Diplomatic Ties, Strategic Cooperation

PHNOM PENH, Sep 21, 2026 (KPT) — Cambodia and Romania have agreed to strengthen bilateral relations with a focus on economic, educational and strategic cooperation, officials said. The discussions took place in Bucharest on September 17 during a meeting between Ty Nitor, under‑secretary of state at Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Călin Mitri, director general of the Global Affairs Directorate at Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Both sides reviewed ways to deepen institutional links and make greater use of their respective positions within ASEAN and the European Union to expand economic and educational ties. They also explored cooperation in key strategic sectors and closer coordination between their foreign ministries to support opportunities for businesses through diplomatic and commercial networks. Ty welcomed Romania’s recent accession to ASEAN’s Treaty of Amity and Cooperation, describing it as a positive foundation for further developing Cambodia–Romania relations. The officials also discussed the forthcoming Francophonie Summit in Cambodia and opportunities for closer collaboration surrounding the event. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to giving fresh momentum to bilateral relations. The meeting formed part of Ty’s working visit to Romania, which focused on strengthening ties, particularly in the economic sector, and gathering practical input for Cambodia’s Economic Diplomacy Strategy.
