Cambodia, Malaysia Pledge Closer Defence Cooperation Amid Regional Security Concerns

PHNOM PENH, Aug 7, 2026 (KPT) – Cambodia and Malaysia have pledged to deepen defence cooperation, agreeing to expand collaboration in military training, peacekeeping operations, and maritime security. The commitment was made during talks in Phnom Penh between Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet and Malaysian Defense Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin. Khaled described Cambodia as a close and trusted partner, stating that his visit reflected the determination of both governments to strengthen ties through practical cooperation. He indicated that Malaysia would continue to support Cambodia through defense training programs while seeking greater collaboration in peacekeeping operations, maritime security, responses to non-traditional security challenges, and the development of artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities for defense. Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet welcomed the pledge, noting significant progress in bilateral defense relations in recent years. He reaffirmed Cambodia’s support for strengthening institutional links between the two ministries and expressed appreciation for Malaysia’s role in facilitating the recent ceasefire with Thailand. He also thanked Kuala Lumpur for leading the ASEAN Observer Team (AOT), which is monitoring the implementation of the truce. The meeting also covered regional and international issues, including the Cambodia-Thailand border situation. Samdech Thipadei reiterated Cambodia’s position that outstanding border issues must be resolved peacefully under international law and existing bilateral agreements.
